What are stomach or digestive diseases?
Digestive issues are a broad term for any problem affecting your digestive system, the organs that break food down into the nutrients your body needs, from your stomach and gut through to your bowel. These conditions range from short-lived issues, like a stomach bug, to long-term conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or coeliac disease.
Many people feel indigestion or bloating, and it settles on its own. If your symptoms are persistent, keep returning, or are bothering you in everyday life, have a private GP consultation with Dr Faizal. He reviews your symptoms, medical history, and diagnostic results to provide acute treatment along with ongoing support via video consultation follow-ups if required.

Stomach or digestive symptoms to look out for
Digestive symptoms vary from person to person, but the common symptoms include:
- Bloating and trapped wind
- Stomach ache, cramps or discomfort
- Heartburn, acid reflux or indigestion
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- A change in your usual bowel habits
- Feeling sick (nausea) or bringing food back up
- Loss of appetite or fatigue
If any of these keep coming back, or you are not sure what is normal for you, it is worth being properly assessed rather than putting up with it.
Signs of serious digestion problems
Most digestive symptoms are not serious, but some need medical attention. The NHS advises seeing a doctor urgently if you have any of the following:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blood in your stool, or black, tarry stools
- Difficulty or pain when swallowing
- Persistent or repeated vomiting
- A lump or swelling in your abdomen
- Severe or sudden stomach or abdominal pain
- A new, lasting change in bowel habits, especially if you are over 50
If you have sudden, severe pain or are seriously unwell, call 999 or attend your nearest A&E department. This page is information, not a substitute for urgent medical assessment.
What causes digestive issues?
There is rarely a single cause. Digestive symptoms can come from many things, including:
- Diet, such as rich, fatty or spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine or too little fibre
- Infections, such as gastroenteritis
- Food intolerances and coeliac disease, an immune reaction to gluten
- IBS and other long-term gut conditions
- Stress and anxiety
- Hormonal changes, including during perimenopause or menopause
- Some medicines, including certain GLP-1 medicines
Stress and anxiety, and hormonal changes during perimenopause or menopause, can also play a part. Dr Faizal helps identify what is contributing to your symptoms.
Common gastrointestinal conditions
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
A long-term condition causing tummy pain, bloating and bouts of diarrhoea or constipation. IBS has no single cause, but triggers and symptoms can be managed.
Bloating & Trapped Wind
Bloating can be uncomfortable, often embarrassing, and usually linked to diet, gut sensitivity or an underlying condition.
Acid Reflux & Indigestion
Burning behind the chest, an acidic taste or discomfort after eating. Where treatment is appropriate, common options include antacids and acid-reducing medicines.
Constipation & Diarrhoea
Changes in how often you go, or the consistency of your stools, are common and usually settle with simple measures. If it continues, it deserves a proper look.
Norovirus (Stomach Bugs)
Norovirus is the most common stomach bug, causing sickness and diarrhoea. Dr Faizal can advise on recovery, hydration, and investigation.
Ongoing or Unexplained Stomach Pain
Recurrent tummy pain that you cannot explain is worth assessing, both to find the cause and to rule out anything that needs further tests or a specialist opinion.
If you cannot make it to the clinic for a digestive issues consultation, our GP can see you via a home visit.
Diagnostic tests for digestive or stomach problems
Getting the right diagnosis starts with time and a proper history. Blood tests, stool samples and camera tests are often used to get to the bottom of digestive problems. Depending on your case, Dr Faizal may recommend:

FAQs about digestive & stomach problems
How do I fix a messed-up digestive system?
Try to take regular meals, more fibre, plenty of fluids and manage stress. If symptoms persist despite that, the most reliable next step is a proper assessment so the underlying cause is identified. Dr Faizal will work out what is going on and build a plan around it.
How can I restore or reset my gut health?
Good gut health usually comes from consistent habits. Take a fibre-rich diet, stay hydrated, limit alcohol and ultra-processed food, and manage sleep and stress. If your gut still is not right, it is worth checking for specific causes such as coeliac disease, an intolerance or IBS, which Dr Faizal can investigate.
What are signs of serious stomach issues?
Red flags include unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, a lump in your tummy, or a new lasting change in bowel habits, especially over 50. These do not necessarily mean something serious, but they do need a GP consultation.
What are the most common digestive disorders?
Some of the most common include IBS, acid reflux and indigestion (GORD), constipation, gastroenteritis, coeliac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis). Dr Faizal can tell them apart and test where needed.
Can anxiety cause digestive issues?
Yes, anxiety can trigger or worsen symptoms like cramping, bloating and changes in bowel habits. Dr Faizal treats your digestive symptoms and any stress or anxiety contributing to them.
How do you test for digestive issues?
It depends on your symptoms. Dr Faizal may arrange blood tests (such as a coeliac screen, full blood count, or thyroid and liver checks), stool tests, or a referral for camera tests such as an endoscopy.
Can Dr Faizal see children with tummy problems?
Yes, Dr Faizal offers digestive issue consultations as part of our children’s health service and will advise if further assessment is needed.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
No, you do not need a referral. Dr Faizal will assess you and arrange any onward referral himself if it is required.
