Methods explained

Contraception & methods explained

Contraception is any method used to prevent pregnancy — by stopping egg formation, blocking sperm, or preventing a fertilised egg from implanting. At our clinic, contraception is prescribed after an individual assessment of your health, medical history and preferences, in line with NICE guidance on long-acting reversible contraception, which recommends every woman receives full, unhurried information.

As the NHS explains, methods fall into two broad groups:

Hormonal Contraception

The pill, patch, injection, implant or hormonal coil — using progestogen, sometimes with oestrogen, to stop egg formation.

Non-Hormonal Contraception

The copper coil, condoms or diaphragm — working as a physical or chemical barrier instead, if you prefer to avoid hormones.

Choosing contraception is personal — a consultation with a GP helps you decide what's best for your health and outcomes. For other concerns, you can also visit our sexual health clinic.

Common questions

FAQs about contraception

Reviewed by Dr Faizal Secretary MRCGP
What is contraception?

Contraception is any method that prevents pregnancy — whether by stopping ovulation, blocking sperm, or acting as a barrier. It ranges from hormonal methods like the pill to non-hormonal options like the copper coil or condoms.

What are the different types of contraception?

There are over a dozen methods available in the UK, including the combined pill, the progestogen-only pill, the patch, the injection, the implant, the coil (IUD), the hormonal coil (IUS), condoms and the diaphragm, as listed on the NHS methods of contraception page. The right one depends on your health, your routine and whether you want to avoid hormones.

What are contraception side effects?

Common side effects of the contraceptive pill can include spotting, headaches, breast tenderness or mild mood changes, which often improve after a few months. Dr Faizal will review your medical history to help you choose the safest option.

Will emergency contraception delay periods?

Yes — emergency contraception can sometimes make your next period come earlier or later than usual. It may also cause temporary spotting or changes to your usual bleeding pattern.

How do I get emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception is available from NHS services, many pharmacies and private GP clinics. At My Private Clinic Preston, you can book a confidential same-day appointment with Dr Faizal for rapid assessment, advice and treatment where appropriate.

What is a contraception patch?

The contraceptive patch is a small patch worn on the skin that releases hormones to prevent ovulation and pregnancy. It is changed weekly, making it an alternative for those who prefer not to take a daily pill.

Does Dr Faizal provide coil contraception?

Dr Faizal provides consultations and advice about coil contraception (IUD/IUS) to help you decide if it is suitable. Coil fitting will be available at My Private Clinic soon, with further details coming shortly.

Is non-hormonal contraception safe?

Yes — non-hormonal contraception is safe for many people and can be a good option if you want to avoid hormones. Options include the copper coil, condoms and diaphragms, and Dr Faizal can help you choose the right method for your needs.

Can I get a repeat prescription for contraception privately?

Yes — you can book a private contraception consultation for a repeat prescription. Dr Faizal will review your health and current method to ensure it remains suitable for you.

Do I need a GP referral to book a contraception consultation?

No — you do not need a referral to book a private contraception consultation at My Private Clinic. You can contact the clinic directly for personalised contraception advice.
