What is tonsillitis & sore throat?

A sore throat, also called pharyngitis, is pain, irritation or a scratchy feeling in the throat. Many sore throats can be managed at home. Tonsillitis is a condition where the two glands at the back of the throat become swollen. Both are common and usually caused by viruses, though sometimes by bacteria such as streptococcus.

According to the NHS, most cases clear up within a week without antibiotics. But it helps to know whether a sore throat is just temporary or needs a proper check-up. With a quick, private GP consultation, Dr Faizal can help you understand and manage swollen tonsils. He also treats colds, flu, chest infections and tonsillitis in children as part of our children’s health service.

What to look out for

Sore throat & tonsillitis symptoms

Symptoms vary, but common signs of a sore throat or tonsillitis include:

  • A painful, scratchy throat that hurts more when swallowing
  • Red and swollen tonsils
  • White patches or spots on the tonsils (sometimes)
  • A high temperature, headache and general fatigue
  • Swollen, tender glands in the neck
  • Bad breath, a hoarse voice or earache
  • In children: tummy pain, tiredness and refusing food or drink

If these symptoms keep returning, or you are not sure what is normal for you, it is worth being properly assessed rather than putting up with it.

When to worry

Sore throat & tonsillitis red flags

Most sore throats are not serious, but some need urgent care. The NHS advises seeking same-day medical help if you or your child:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • A muffled or slurred voice
  • Pain or difficulty swallowing fluids or saliva
  • Severe pain on one side of the throat (a possible abscess or quinsy)
  • Neck stiffness
  • A rash that does not fade when pressed under a glass
  • Symptoms that last longer than a week or keep getting worse

This page is information, not a substitute for urgent care. For a very unwell child, seek an urgent same-day GP consultation or book a home visit. If breathing is affected, call 999.

What Dr Faizal can help with

Find relief: throat conditions Dr Faizal can help with

Tonsillitis (Viral & Bacterial)

Swollen tonsils that cause severe throat pain. Dr Faizal helps diagnose whether the cause is viral or bacterial, treats symptoms, and prescribes antibiotics only when they are genuinely needed.

Strep Throat & Bacterial Sore Throat

A bacterial throat infection that can need antibiotics. Dr Faizal uses recognised symptom scoring to judge how likely a bacterial cause is before prescribing.

Tonsil Stones

Small, hard whitish lumps that form in the tonsils and can cause bad breath and discomfort. Usually harmless, but Dr Faizal can advise on safe management and when they need attention.

Glandular Fever

A viral infection that can mimic tonsillitis but lasts longer. Where it is suspected, Dr Faizal can arrange blood tests to confirm it.

Recurring & Persistent Sore Throats

If sore throats keep coming back, Dr Faizal can look at the pattern, rule out other causes, and discuss whether a specialist opinion is worthwhile.

Where glandular fever or another cause is suspected, Dr Faizal can arrange blood tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Your treatment

How Dr Faizal treats sore throat & tonsillitis

Tonsillitis treatment depends on the cause. Dr Faizal works out what is going on before recommending the right plan for you.

Detailed Check-Up

Dr Faizal examines your throat and reviews your symptoms. Where there are clues of a viral or bacterial infection, he may arrange blood tests to confirm the diagnosis and decide whether you need simple symptom relief or an antibiotic plan.

Symptom Relief & Self-Care

Advice on rest, fluids, pain relief (paracetamol or ibuprofen) and soothing throat lozenges using MHRA-approved medicines. Dr Faizal will check whether the NHS Pharmacy First route for sore throat is right for you, and can issue a sick note where an infection is contagious.

Antibiotics If Needed

Following NICE guidance, Dr Faizal uses symptom scoring to judge whether a bacterial infection is likely and prescribes only when appropriate. Any side effects from medicines can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Recurrent Tonsillitis & Referral

If tonsillitis keeps coming back, Dr Faizal can discuss the options, including a specialist ENT referral to consider whether tonsil removal is worthwhile. Once you have your plan, you can follow up by video consultation.

Where an infection is contagious, Dr Faizal can issue a sick note, and if a specialist opinion is needed he writes a referral during your appointment.

Common questions

FAQs about tonsil stones & tonsillitis

Reviewed by Dr Faizal Secretary MRCGP
How long does tonsillitis last?

In most cases tonsillitis settles, with or without antibiotics. A simple viral sore throat often eases within a few days. If it has lasted more than a week, or your symptoms are returning or getting worse, it is worth being seen. Dr Faizal offers same-day consultations.

How do you get rid of tonsillitis quickly?

Rest, fluids, pain relief and throat lozenges ease symptoms while your body clears the infection. Where there is a bacterial cause, Dr Faizal can prescribe antibiotics, which is the fastest safe route when they are genuinely needed.

What is the main cause of tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is usually caused by the same viruses that cause colds and flu. A smaller number of cases are bacterial, most often streptococcus (strep throat). Dr Faizal can help diagnose the cause and prescribe the appropriate treatment.

Is tonsillitis contagious?

Yes. Tonsillitis can spread through coughs, sneezes and close contact, and you are most contagious while you have a fever. Good hand hygiene and staying off school or work until the fever settles help stop it spreading to others.

What triggers tonsillitis in adults?

Adult tonsillitis is usually triggered by a viral or bacterial infection passed on through close contact, and can be more likely when you are run down or around others who are unwell. Smoking and acid reflux can also irritate the throat.

What can be mistaken for tonsillitis?

Glandular fever, strep throat, quinsy (a tonsil abscess), oral thrush, tonsil stones and acid reflux can all be mistaken for tonsillitis. It is worth having your throat properly examined rather than guessing.

What is the 7-5-3 rule for tonsillitis?

The 7-5-3 rule is a guide used to help decide whether tonsil removal should be considered: 7 or more episodes in one year, 5 or more a year for two years, or 3 or more a year for three years. Dr Faizal can assess your pattern and refer if this applies.

How do you get rid of tonsil stones?

Avoid poking at the tonsils. Gargling with salt water and keeping good oral hygiene may help dislodge small stones. If they are large, keep returning, or cause bad breath and discomfort, see a GMC-registered GP such as Dr Faizal for advice.

What is the difference between a sore throat and tonsillitis?

A sore throat (pharyngitis) is general pain in the throat, while tonsillitis is a condition where the tonsils become swollen, often with pain and white spots, and tends to feel more severe. Dr Faizal can confirm which you have on examination.

Can Dr Faizal see children with sore throats?

Yes. As part of our children’s health service, Dr Faizal offers same-day assessment for children, advising on treatment and when further care is needed.
