Looking for a PSA Blood Test? Get Appointment Today!

If you are looking for a PSA blood test in Preston, My Private Clinic in Fulwood, Preston offers a private PSA blood test for £80. It is available as a standalone test, and you do not need to book a wider health screening package for it.

Your result is provided directly to you, and if you want help understanding it, a follow-up appointment with Dr Faizal Secretary can also be arranged easily.

The test explained

What Can a PSA Blood Test Tell You About Your Prostate Health?

PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a protein made by the prostate gland. A PSA blood test measures how much PSA is circulating in your blood. If your PSA level is higher than expected for your age, it can point towards a prostate condition worth investigating, but a raised PSA level does not automatically indicate cancer: several other conditions can raise PSA, including an enlarged prostate, prostatitis or a recent infection.

A result within the expected range can be reassuring, while a raised result gives you a reason to have a proper conversation with a doctor rather than to panic.

Who it’s for

When Might a PSA Test Be Right for You?

PSA testing is a personal decision. Not every man needs it, and there are situations where having your PSA level checked makes good sense.

You might take up a prostate test if:

  • You have noticed urinary symptoms: difficulty starting, a weaker flow, getting up in the night more than usual
  • You have a family history of prostate cancer
  • You have previously had a raised PSA result and want to track whether it has changed
  • You have no symptoms but want to understand your baseline PSA level and monitor it over time
  • You have concerns you have been putting off and want to do something practical about them

If you are still not sure whether testing is appropriate for you specifically, a private GP appointment with Dr Faizal gives you the space to talk it through before committing to anything.

The appointment

What Does the Test Actually Involve?

A small blood sample is taken from a vein in your arm, the same as any routine blood test. It takes a few minutes at most. The sample goes to a laboratory for analysis, and your result is returned directly to you.

There is nothing uncomfortable about the process. If your result shows a raised PSA level, it is advisable to discuss it with a GP.

Before your test

What Should You Avoid Before a PSA Blood Test?

A few things can temporarily push PSA levels up and affect the accuracy of your result, so it is best to know what to avoid in the 48 hours beforehand:

  • Ejaculation, including sex and masturbation
  • Vigorous exercise, particularly cycling
  • Anal sex

If you have had a urinary tract infection recently, it is generally advisable to wait at least six weeks before testing, as infection can significantly raise PSA levels. You also do not need to fast before a PSA blood test.

Your results

What Is a Normal PSA Level for Your Age?

No single PSA level can be called normal for all men. PSA levels generally increase with age. Beyond age, the size of the prostate, current medications, recent symptoms and any family history all play an important part in how your result is interpreted.

UK clinical guidance does not support using one universal PSA threshold to define normal across all age groups. If you want to understand what your specific result means, a private GP appointment with Dr Faizal is the most useful step.

Raised results

Does a Raised PSA Mean Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is not always indicated by a raised PSA level.

An enlarged prostate, inflammation or infection are some of the causes of a raised PSA level. Your result therefore needs to be considered together with your symptoms, medical history and other relevant factors before any decisions are made.

You can book an appointment with Dr Faizal if you receive a result that worries you, to discuss what it means and whether further testing is necessary.

Depending on your age and symptoms, he will guide you on the next step, which may include a repeat PSA test after a few weeks, a private MRI scan, or a specialist referral.

After the test

What Happens After Your PSA Test?

Your result is sent directly to you once it is ready. From there, you have two options.

If the result is within the expected range and you have no symptoms, that is all you need: the peace of mind of a straightforward result.

If your result is raised or borderline, or simply leaves you with questions, you can book an appointment with Dr Faizal to go through it properly. He will look at the number in the context of your age, symptoms and history rather than treating it as an isolated figure.

NHS or private

Can You Get a PSA Test Through the NHS?

If it is appropriate for your circumstances, you may be able to have a PSA test through the NHS. Your GP can discuss whether PSA testing is appropriate, based on your symptoms, medical history and individual risk factors.

Private testing is an alternative for those who want to have a PSA test on their own terms, move more quickly, or have the test without a GP appointment first.

Choosing private testing does not affect your NHS care in any way.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Reviewed by Dr Faizal Secretary MRCGP
Can I have a PSA test if I have no symptoms?

Yes. Some men take up this test because of family history, or simply want to know their baseline level. It is still worth speaking to your GP before testing when you have no symptoms, so you understand what the result can and cannot tell you.

Do I need a referral to book?

No. The test can be arranged directly with My Private Clinic. No NHS GP referral and no wider health package are required.

How is a PSA blood test done?

As with any standard blood test, a small sample of blood is drawn from a vein in your arm. It takes a few minutes.

What does a raised PSA result actually mean?

A PSA blood test measures prostate-specific antigen in the blood. Dr Faizal will interpret the result alongside your age, symptoms, medical history and any other prostate issues. A raised PSA level does not automatically mean prostate cancer.

Can I have a repeat PSA test if I have had one before?

Yes. Monitoring PSA over time is clinically useful, particularly if you have previously had a raised or borderline result. The timing of a repeat test depends on your previous result and your circumstances, and Dr Faizal can advise on that.

What if I want to speak to a GP after getting my result?

A follow-up appointment with Dr Faizal can be arranged after your result is returned. It is separate from the test itself and entirely your choice.

How much does a private PSA test cost in Preston?

The standalone PSA blood test at My Private Clinic in Fulwood, Preston costs £80. There are no additional charges for the test itself, and you are not required to book a broader health package alongside it. A GP consultation to discuss your result is arranged separately and quoted before it is confirmed.

I came across Dr Secretary's private clinic when searching for private, local to me, Preston GP appointments. I was immediately impressed by the flexibility of appointments available, ease of booking, and the information on Dr Secretary's website. I could tell Dr Secretary was the type of clinician to actually listen to his patients and offer valuable professional insight. I booked a last minute same day appointment for my daughter, as the pre booked NHS appointment was weeks away; and as I had suspected Dr Secretary was patient, thorough and very attentive. He listened to all concerns, asked all the appropriate questions, carefully weighing up possibilities and options, and was very transparent throughout the entire appointment. He put my mind at ease, with initial concerns, and recommended suitable next steps which have been very helpful. I would thoroughly recommend Dr Secretary to anyone looking for a reliable, attentive and professional private GP, and we certainly won't hesitate to book again. Many thanks on behalf of myself and my daughter.

Working with My Private Clinic has been a wonderful experience. I needed a doctor to see my mother at home quickly. Her regular GP was not available and so we contacted Dr Secretary who came to visit at home the very next day. He’s wonderful to work with and I can fully recommend Dr Secretary and My Private Clinic
