When should you get a mole checked?

Moles are common pigmented spots on the skin, and the vast majority are completely harmless. Most people have between 10 and 40 moles. It is normal for moles to change slowly over many years, but a mole that changes quickly, looks different from your others, or appears for the first time in adulthood should always be assessed.

A helpful way to check a mole is the ABCDE guide: Asymmetry (one half unlike the other), Border (irregular or blurred edges), Colour (more than one shade), Diameter (larger than about 6mm), and Evolving (changing in size, shape, colour, or starting to itch or bleed). If a mole shows any of these features, book an assessment promptly so it can be examined properly.

During your consultation, Dr Faizal Secretary examines the mole and your skin, discusses your history and any changes, and advises on the best next step. If a mole looks suspicious, he can arrange a prompt specialist referral for closer assessment or removal. Moles that are benign but bothersome, catching, or a cosmetic concern can often be removed by minor surgery once cancer has been ruled out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if a mole is dangerous?

Use the ABCDE guide: asymmetry, irregular border, more than one colour, diameter over about 6mm, and any evolving change such as growth, itching, or bleeding. Any mole with these features, or one that simply looks different from your others, should be checked promptly.

Do I need a referral for a mole check?

No. You can book directly with Dr Faizal Secretary for a private mole assessment. If closer assessment or removal is needed, he can arrange a specialist referral during your appointment.

Can Dr Faizal remove a mole?

Benign moles that are bothersome or a cosmetic concern can often be removed by minor surgery once they have been assessed. If a mole looks suspicious, it is referred to a specialist rather than removed in a general practice setting, so it can be examined under the microscope.

Is a changing mole always skin cancer?

No. Moles can change for harmless reasons, and most changing moles are not cancerous. However, because a changing mole can occasionally be an early sign of melanoma, it is always safest to have it assessed.

How quickly can I be seen for a worrying mole?

Same-day and next-day appointments are often available at My Private Clinic, so you do not have to wait to have a worrying mole assessed.

Will a removed mole leave a scar?

Any removal can leave a small scar. Dr Faizal will explain the likely result and aftercare before any procedure, so you can make an informed decision.
