What is a lipoma?

A lipoma is a soft, fatty lump that grows slowly just under the skin. Lipomas are benign, which means they are not cancerous, and they are one of the most common soft-tissue lumps. They feel soft and doughy, move easily under the fingers, and are usually painless. They most often appear on the shoulders, neck, back, arms, and thighs.

Most lipomas do not need any treatment. It is worth having a lump assessed to confirm it is a lipoma, and particularly if it is growing quickly, becoming painful, feels firm or fixed, or is a cosmetic concern. Having the diagnosis confirmed gives peace of mind and rules out other causes of a lump.

Dr Faizal Secretary examines the lump, confirms the likely diagnosis, and explains your options. A lipoma that is symptomatic, in an awkward position, or a cosmetic concern can often be removed by minor surgery under local anaesthetic. Larger, deeper, or unusual lumps may be better assessed with imaging or a specialist referral, which Dr Faizal can arrange. He will talk you through the most appropriate option for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a lipoma dangerous?

Lipomas are benign and not cancerous. Very rarely, a lump that looks like a lipoma can be something else, which is why it is sensible to have any new, growing, or painful lump assessed so the diagnosis can be confirmed.

How can you tell a lipoma from a cyst?

A lipoma is a soft, moveable lump of fatty tissue, while a cyst is a sac filled with fluid or keratin and often has a small central opening. Dr Faizal can usually tell them apart on examination and advise on the best treatment.

Does a lipoma need to be removed?

Most lipomas are harmless and do not need removal. Removal is usually considered if a lipoma is painful, growing, in an awkward position, or a cosmetic concern. Dr Faizal will discuss whether removal is right for you.

How is a lipoma removed?

A suitable lipoma can be removed by minor surgery under local anaesthetic, usually through a small incision. Larger or deeper lipomas may need imaging or a specialist referral, which Dr Faizal can arrange.

Will a lipoma come back after removal?

A lipoma that is fully removed does not usually return in the same place, although new lipomas can occasionally develop elsewhere. Dr Faizal will explain what to expect.

Do I need a referral to have a lipoma checked?

No. You can book directly with Dr Faizal Secretary for an assessment, and he will arrange minor surgery or a specialist referral if needed.
